Summer Movie Nights Al Fresco

One of my favorite things to do in my downtime is watch movies. Growing up, my family would pile in our station wagon and go to the local drive-in at least once a month, or we would go to the discount theater out by the mall that showed old movies (not vintage, but movies that had been released 6+ months before) for like $1. When both of those closed, we started going to a newly opened theater in the heart of downtown Modesto almost once a week. While I was away at college an old theater (The State Theater) was refurbished and started showing more indie and less main-stream movies for limited runs (they also serve alcohol!), which brought whole new life into the movie experience in Modesto.

That's the thing I love about watching movies, there are a lot of different ways to view them– even in Baja! There are several theaters here, including the VIP movie experience at the Cinemex in Puerto Paraiso Mall, which features lounge-chairs and servers that will bring food right to your seat. There are also several restaurants and businesses that have taped into the movie-market and hold monthly, weekly, or seasonal movie events. Flora Farms falls into the latter; one night a week during the summer they show "movies on the lawn". When I saw their schedule for July included "Jurassic Park"– my favorite movie OF ALL TIME– I immediately made a reservation for 2.

The setup for movie night at Flora Farms is so cute! They have it in their main lawn area, behind the restaurant, which they also use for croquet. They put out hay bails with blankets on top and in front, have some chairs setting out in the back– and they offer free lemonade and popcorn!! You can experience the whole evening 100% complimentary if you wanted. The snack stand also has a drink station with lots of options to purchase and cotton candy, yum yum yum!

Dinner service continued on throughout the night, but it didn't affect the experience of movie night– and I don't think we affected their dining experience. In fact, a lot of people lingered over post-dinner to catch a few minutes of the movie.

I've been to a few events in the Mango Grove (Flora's event/wedding space) with the same setup, but most people sat onto of the hay bails. For movie night everyone used them like chair backs.

Flora Farms definitely did not disappoint with movie night. Just look at this snack setup!

You can also buy pizza from the farm menu and get it delivered to your hay bail– movie and pizza? Talk about perfect combination!

I'm a bit of a popcorn snob and I don't always like movie popcorn, so I BYOP. I did try the popcorn that Flora Farms popped and it was delish! If you're in Baja during the summer, I definitely recommended coming to Flora's for their movie night– did I mention it is free!! Get a pizza too (not free, but worth it)– you won't be disappointed!
